The Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Skincare

Being a beginner in the skincare routine can be intimidating;there are so many options. The process is very difficult to understand, where to start and if started, is it working? As it is important to dress according to your body shape; you should also curate your skin according to your skin type. If you have patchiness in your skin then you most likely have dry skin and if you’re shiny all over then you have an oily type skin. Beyond these types, your skin can also dehydrated, normal, sensitive or acne-prone. Once you figure this out it gets easier.

With all this in mind, here’s an absolute beginners guide to skincare:

While applying products always remember to use it on the basis of their texture that is from the thinnest to the thickest consistency. This will allow the product to be better absorbed into the skin. You don’t have to apply everything listed here, but if you choose to then this is the best order to apply to get maximum effectiveness.

Cleanser

In my opinion, cleansing is the most important among all. Morning and night cleaning is non-negotiable. It is essential to choose a good cleanser that can help you get rid of dirt, oil and pollution from your skin. Two step cleaning is also a good way to clean your face. One, in which you remove all your makeup and second make sure your skin doesn’t have any residue left. Cleansing balm is a great option but you can also use micro-fiber cleansing pads. Then follow up the second cleanser that is suited best to your skin.

Toner

One can skip the step of toning if you have double cleansed. Toners basically make sure there’s no residue left on your skin and also help to balance its pH level. Recently introduced toners also have brightening and hydrating properties.Toners can also be classified according to the skin type. It helps close pores and tighten gaps that occur after cleansing. Toner can also protect skin by removing chlorine and minerals present in tap water.

Serum

This is where you can alter your skincare to your needs. There is a variety of serum for almost every single concern like brightening, hydrating, preventing wrinkles, protecting your skin from the environment etc. In a skincare product, serum is a product that supplies the highest concentration of active ingredients. If you’re planning to invest on any skincare product then this is it! It is believed that regular use of serum can give your skin a firm and smooth texture; and make the pores appear smaller. It also increases the moisture level of your skin.

Moisturizer

Moisturizers are designed to protect our skin’s barriers. It offers functional skin benefits like improving skin optical characteristics, increasing skin hydration, making the skin smooth and soft. It delivers ingredients to the skin. It locks your skin and makes sure moisture doesn’t escape. Use water- based gel instead of heavier creams if you have oily skin.

Sunscreen

Always remember, the last step of your daytime skincare routine should be the sunscreen as it has physical and mineral properties which block the UV rays. But if you’re using a chemical sunscreen, this step becomes tricky. This happens because to be effective the chemical sunscreen is needed to be absorbed, therefore using it after moisturizers can delay and hamper that. So if you’re using chemical sunscreen to get best result use it before moisturizer. In this case applying moisturizer will give no benefit because of the thick chemical used before it. To avoid these problems use sunscreen with zinc which you can apply after your moisturizer, as zinc protects your skin broadly against UVA and UVB rays.

Don’t forget to exfoliate

Exfoliation helps to get rid of the dead skin cells on top-layer of your skin. By removing this layer of skin, the complexion of your skin gets brightened and also allows the skincare products to penetrate deeper inside your skin. Like sunscreen, exfoliants are also of two types: physical and chemical. The physical exfoliants remove dead skin cells manually in the form of granules. Whereas, chemical exfoliants generally hold some form of acid in it and dissolve in the skin cells. A dermatologist will always recommend you 4 steps of basic skin care routine- cleansing, toning, moisturizing and sun block. You need to understand your skin type and then choose products accordingly for the best result. Do consult a dermatologist if you are having a problem with your skin care routine.
