In today’s world of social media, a good smile is everyone’s desire. Malaligned teeth can make the person conscious smile about his/her smile, which affects the overall confidence of that individual. If not corrected, crooked teeth can be a problem throughout life.

Braces have proven to be highly effective for straightening teeth and fixing other orthodontic problems. Braces can be used to treat many different oral conditions, beyond cosmetic reasons.

Not just esthetics, braces primarily corrects the whole functioning of the mouth.

Braces treatment helps you get a confident smile which adds value to your overall personality.

With all the available options & varieties, braces treatment is not just limited to children. Adult orthodontics treatments are becoming increasingly common, because of the excellent results that can be achieved by braces.

The requirement of braces can be assessed at an early age of 7 yrs by your dentist. The treatment initiation can vary as per the specific condition between 9-14 yrs. Though there is no age limit for the treatment, it does not mean one must delay their treatment.

Below mentioned are the important things which will guide you for getting braces no matter what your age is.

Visibly crooked teeth: Not only does it hamper the smile but also the ability to maintain oral hygiene with brushing or flossing. It makes the mouth prone to cavities. The food that often gets stuck in between the teeth leading to bad breath & gum diseases. Crowding, which is the most common condition, worsens with time. It occurs due to a lack of space for teeth. Braces treatment actually aligns the crooked teeth giving you the perfect smile.

Gaps between teeth:It typically occurs when the size of the teeth is smaller as compared to the jaw bone. Gaps could also be the cause of habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting. The spacing causes gums between the teeth to be prone to inflammation due to food lodgment & plaque accumulation. With the help of braces, the gaps can be closed, sorting all the associated problems.

Bite issues: A bite is an arrangement of upper & lower teeth when the mouth is closed. An improper bite can lead to speech issues or improper pronunciation. This condition also leads to undue grinding & wear of the teeth. If untreated, it can lead to sensitivity of the severely grinded and worn off teeth and difficulty in consuming hot or cold food items. Hence the timely correction of these problems is important. Braces can help prevent such future-related issues.

Difficulty in speech or chewing:

Malaligned teeth can also be associated with issues like frequent tongue bites, cheek bites, or lip bites while chewing food. Swallowing of food can also be difficult in certain cases. One of the primary functions of teeth is to properly grind food, because malaligned teeth do not meet each other, the efficiency of chewing is compromised. These alignment issues do not correct on their own. Braces/orthodontics treatment can only correct all these problems.

Jaw pain & clicking:

Jaw pain and headache can be related to malaligned teeth. An uneven bite can cause undue pressure and stress on the jaw bone. Over a period of time, it causes pain across the joints, leading to headaches. Clicking or popping can be felt around the jaw while opening and closing the mouth. One can experience pain around the ear and jaw region in the morning. These symptoms are associated with TMJ disorder (temporomandibular joint). Orthodontic treatment is advised when the jaw pain is associated with malaligned teeth.

Speak to a dentist about the possibility of needing braces if you have any of the symptoms listed above.
