Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder that is triggered by a shocking event — where a person can either witness the event or experience it. It is typical to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation. Post-traumatic stress disorder can be developed by anyone at any age. Adults or children, who have suffered through a loss of a loved one, physical assault, sexual abuse, been in an accident, or other serious events in their life are at a larger risk. Ten of every hundred people out there will experience Post-traumatic stress disorder at some point in time in their lives. Patients who suffer from the disorder can indicate any cause like depression and general anxiety, fear of leaving their home, somatic complaints, irritability, inability to work, or sleep concerns. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Women are more likely to develop this disorder than men, and genes may also play a role in making one prone to develop PTSD than others. It may be challenging to take that first step to help yourself. It is of the essence to realize that although it may take some time, with treatment, you can get better. There is no shame in accepting what you are suffering from a denial of the present condition only worsens the situation.

Treatments and Therapies

It is crucial for anyone with Post-traumatic stress disorder to be processed by a professional mental health provider for the same. Some people with the disorder may need to try different treatments to find what helps eradicate their symptoms. Other ongoing problems can include panic disorder, depression, substance abuse, and feeling suicidal.

  • Medications

Antidepressant is a type of medication used effectively to treat post-traumatic stress disorder which aid to control PTSD symptoms such as gloominess, anxiety, anger, and feeling numb inside. Other medications may be helpful for treating specific PTSD symptoms, such as sleep problems and nightmares. Doctors along with their patients need to work together to find the best combination for effective treatment.

  • Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy also referred to as Talk therapy concerns in talking with a mental health professional to help fight the mental disorder. Both one on one and group based Psychotherapy is available as per your comfort. Talk therapy treatment for Post-traumatic stress disorder usually lasts from a couple of months to a year. Research shows evidence that assistance from family and friends is an integral part of recovery.

Talk therapy can help target the symptoms of PTSD directly. Other therapies also help focus on social, family, or job-related problems. The doctor or therapist may pool various therapies reckoning on each person’s necessity.

  • Avoid alcohol and drugs-  The intake of alcohol or drugs in this state will only worsen the situation. It will only give way to other disorders. Moderation with alcohol is a good policy for anyone but if you have a genetic tendency to depression you may consider avoiding it altogether since it’s a depressant. Contraband drug use should be avoided totally.
  • Communication-  Staying connected with other people is a big help in this scenario.  There are various ways that you can transmit to somebody about how you’re feeling or doing. Friends, Family, or psychiatrists help from any source that could help do wonders. Some emotional support services offer telephone, email, or instant messaging chat as well.

The key is to be alert of the grounds associated with depression and anxiety. Seek help if you believe you may be suffering from the condition. Being proactive in a  case like this can minimize the peril of processing the condition or at least keep the symptoms nominal if they do occur. It is always a good time to start managing your stress and structuring a base for good mental health. It is also vital to note that mental health conditions can develop even if there is no family history. Mental health issues are complex, so it’s critical to recognize the signs like cut back from socialization, excessive rumination, extreme anxiety, thoughts of self-harm, and periods of mania.
