To be a successful entrepreneur, one needs to be receptive to new ideas and viewpoints other than their own, says Ranjan Dedhia

While an entrepreneur’s journey is never easy, the journey of a woman entrepreneur is much harder. Coming from a family of successful entrepreneurs, Ranjan Dedhia always wanted to start a business of her own. But, life had other things in store for her. Married at a young age, she was soon raising a family and her dream and aspiration took a back seat. However, she always knew that she wanted to be more than just a housewife.

Growing up, she loved using a variety of body and bath products. However, she soon noticed that many of these luxurious skincare products were not as effective or natural as they claimed to be. Most of these products did contain toxic ingredients. Being a homemaker with ample time on hand, she started experimenting with creating her own organic beauty and skincare products. These products, created from natural alternatives, were surprisingly very effective. It helped her get a clean, clear and blemish-free complexion.

Spurred on by the success of her at-home experiment and by the words of praises she had been receiving of late; she decided to take this a step further and gave out a lot of trial packs to friends, family members and neighbours. This, too, was meet with success and it was from here, that the idea to start an organic and natural skincare brand developed and thus, was created ‘Magic Dust.’

Here are a few excerpts from the interview where Ranjan speaks about her journey with HelloPost Team:

  • What motivated you to start your own venture?

My experience with using different skincare and hair care products and finding them ineffective is what motivated me to start my own venture. So, in essence, Magic Dust was born out of a personal need.

Having seen the positive impact it had on me, I decided to share my ‘beauty secrets’ with others. Through Magic Dust, I want to offer customers luxurious organic skincare and hair care products that are effective & consistent, sans any toxic ingredients.

Our products are developed using natural ingredients, essential oils and herbal extracts. They are innovative & potent organic formulations and offer great value to consumers. Our pricing structure is also quite flexible. In addition, our products are available in different sizes (small and large) to suit individual budgets.

  • What were the challenges that you’ve faced while starting your own venture?

Magic Dust is a homegrown beauty brand, and as such, initially, making a customer switch brand was quite a challenge. I had to give out a lot of trial packs to friends, family members, and neighbours. However, once they used it, they were impressed by its effectiveness, and soon orders started pouring in. This and the word-of-mouth recommendations by people who had used our products helped us kick-start our venture.

  • Which was the moment in your journey when you felt that it’s not working but still you didn’t lose your hope and kept it going?

Being a start-up, when we first introduced Magic Dust products in the market, not all products were well-received right away. Some had great sales, some didn’t do quite well, while others had to be removed from the catalogue and worked upon. There have been other ups and downs. But, through all this, I persisted.

From day one, it has been a learning process. My strategy has always been to tackle each challenge at a time. This ensured that I don’t get overwhelmed. It also helped me keep self-doubt at bay.

  • What was the biggest achievement during your entrepreneurship journey?

Going from 0 to 35,000 Customers in 5 years has been my biggest achievement. Currently, Magic Dust offers skincare, hair care, beauty products and other accessories. We have a strong customer base of national and International clients.

Our products are available on and Flipkart. They have also been shipped to the international market. Plus, not only individuals but also business set-ups use our products for their clients. Thus, in all, it has been a great entrepreneurship journey, with so much still to achieve.

  • How do you maintain a good work-life balance and mental health?

Making time for family is of utmost importance for me. When I am at home, I disconnect from work totally, and vice versa. This helps me to maintain a good work-life balance. As for mental health, I am a fitness freak. I have run many marathons. I workout daily and practice yoga and meditation. I am also a certified NLP coach, and this has helped me learn valuable life skills.

  • Who is your role model?

My Father. He is a successful entrepreneur who has a chain of apparel departmental stores across Mumbai. He is a kind, loving, and a wonderful human being who believes in giving back and helping out the society and the world. I’ve always looked up to him as a role model and try to emulate his morals and principles in all that I do.

  • What is your secret to success?

Offering non-toxic & paraben-free skincare and hair care products that are also environment-friendly has been our secret to success. The products developed by us are extensively researched to deliver exceptional results. By using these products, customers are able to get healthier skin that looks flawless. They are also able to effectively get rid of many skin and hair issues.

  • What’s one leadership lesson that you’ve learned in your career?

As a woman entrepreneur, one lesson that I’ve learned is ‘doubt kills dream faster than failure ever would.’ When I decided to launch ‘Magic Dust,’ I knew it was not going to be easy as the competition is fierce. But, once I found my path, I worked passionately to ensure my dream would see the light of the day.

  • What are your future plans?

My future plan is making ‘Magic Dust’ a household name that is synonymous with natural beauty and healthy skin. Right now, our goal is to increase our customer database from 35k to 50k through various online and offline marketing channels. We also aim to add more products to our existing categories and to launch new categories soon.

  • Any advice to aspiring women entrepreneurs?

For all aspiring women entrepreneurs, my advice is to believe in your dreams and know that persistence & hard work, always pays-off. As you start your journey, it is important to be receptive to new ideas and viewpoints other than your own. This can help pave the way to future success. Additionally, if you need help, then don’t be afraid to ask; because it’s only when you ask, would you receive.
